Summer fun for kids at the maritime museum
Don’t miss out on the fun in Falmouth this summer as the Maritime Museum pushes the boat out with its line-up of family activities.

Launching straight into a jam-packed programme full of fun, practical and creative activities that start on 21 July, the Falmouth-based Maritime Museum really does have something to entertain the kids every day of the summer holidays. From crabbing and theatre performances to mythical monsters and model sailboat challenges, there will be ongoing activities throughout the whole summer, plus a new hands-on activity each week. What’s more, aside from crabbing which is just 50p a line, all activities are free with the usual admission price.

Every day throughout the holiday, families will be able to test their crab-catching skills off the Museum’s pontoon, every hour from 12 noon to 3pm. Loan of the bucket, bait and line, safety advice and some expert tips costs just 50p, payable on arrival. Plus, all day every day, there will be knot-tying, rope-making, activity trails and the new Monsters & Myths giant floor game.

The Museum will also have a variety of activities, on different days throughout the break, hourly, between noon and 3pm. On Tuesdays, from 24 July to 28 August, will be ‘Tuesday Theatre’ with the Cornish Theatre Collective alternating their two interactive Museum performances Hevva! Hevva! and The Incredible Voyage of the Mystery. While every Thursday, from 26 July until 30 August, will be ‘Fishy Tales’ for all the family, with lively storytelling of mysterious Cornish characters and landscape. At 11am and 2pm on Fridays, between 27 July and 31 August, will be the popular ‘Museum Minnows’, a one hour multi-sensory session that combines creative activities and storytelling for under 5’s, which should be booked on arrival.

To top that, the Museum will then be introducing a new weekly activity, from 1-4pm every day. The first will be ‘Crazy Creatures’ from 23 to 27 July, in which children can learn to bring their drawings to life using amazing Victorian ‘moving picture’ inventions, such as the zoetrope and magic disk. From 30 July to 3 August, they will be able to make their own pirate hat, flag and telescope and parade around the building in their fiercest pirate splendour.

For the ‘Scrapheap Sailboat Challenge’ from 6 to 10 August, the Museum will be providing mounds of recycled ‘scrapheap’ and teaching kids how to make their very own model boat to sail across the boat pool. From 13 to 17 August, and then again from 27-31 August, kids will be able to make a giant mask to take home in ‘Cornish Myths & Monsters’, based on the mythical and magical characters featured in the Museum’s new giant floor game. Finally, between 20-24 August, the challenge will be to take a small plastic bottle, some lolly sticks and an elastic band to make a paddle boat to race across the boat pool.

With so much happening every day and new activities being introduced every week, the Museum should be top of your list to take the kids this summer. And, with the new 12 month passport, you now pay just once to return again and again and again..
