Lost photos of cornwall go on show at maritime museum
Revealing the Cornwall of yesteryear, the Maritime Museum has launched a new exhibition of recently discovered early 20th century photographs of popular Cornish scenes.

The Maritime Museum in Falmouth is taking its visitors on a journey to the past as it opens a new temporary exhibition of photographs which beautifully depict how Cornwall looked almost a hundred years ago.

Showing a variety of spellbinding images of Cornish coastal locations, the large photographs were rescued from a recent house clearance in Kent. Very little is known about their origin, but it is thought they were taken around 1912. Interestingly, none of the pictures were labelled, and so it has since been the new owners’ project to identify each location.

Each picture, when compared to its modern partner, tells the fascinating story behind the evolution of the Cornish landscape and the Museum has printed sheets for you to take around the exhibition to make your own comparisons.

Milly Newman, the Exhibition co-ordinator comments: “This has been such an interesting project and a real detective’s job trying to locate where these pictures were originally taken. A lot of the images were taken from the water and one of our volunteers, David Wilson, has been out combing the shores of the Carrick Roads in his boat to find them. Not all of the locations have been found but those that have been have been recently photographed as a challenge for you to match the old with the new!”

Sylvia Barnard, the owner of the photographs, says: “This has been and continues to be a fascinating quest. Not only in unravelling the mystery of each location but also in meeting so many interesting people. We are grateful to everyone who has gone out of their way to help and the story is not finished yet!”

Don’t miss your chance to step back in time. The new exhibition, entitled ‘Rescued Photographs of Old Cornwall’, will be on show in the Maritime Museum’s temporary exhibition gallery until the end of March.
