This extravaganza of song and dance features hits from Oliver, Grease, Les Mis, The Lion King, Half a Sixpence, and many more much-loved shows. Mon 7 Apr. LECTURE: Paul Greenwood: Once aboard a Cornish Lugger The last days of working fishing luggers in Cornwall are vividly captured in a new book by former Looe fisherman Paul Greenwood.
Join us to hear his frank account of the hardships he encountered at sea as a young crewman aboard the lugger Iris in the 1960s; a brilliant evocation of a bygone age that contrasts with modern conditions in the fishing industry today. 12.30 -3pm at the National Maritime Museum. Thur 10 Apr. LECTURE: Rory MacPhee & Jason Birt - Bio Blitz on the Helford: How, What & Why? New ‘Open Access’ Lecture Programme being run in collaboration with Falmouth Marine School. A series of talks and Q&A sessions by leading experts addressing the latest, most topical developments in a range of specialist marine subjects. These include recent discoveries in marine biology, the pressing environmental issues facing Cornwall, the future of boat design & technology, the use of sport science and managing the impact of leisure and tourism.
24hrs of bio-research on the Helford estuary, how we did it and what we found - why should anyone care? For the answers to these questions about our local bio-diverse habit and future research opportunities, come and listen to how some of Falmouth Marine School’s own bio-researchers are getting down and dirty in our very own habitats. 2-3pm at the National Maritime Musem Open to students and anyone keen to learn more about these important subjects. Fri 11 Apr. People’s Theatre Company Presents THE WITCH’S BOGEY A funky, pop musical about good versus evil and the importance of kindness. Children and parents are in for a treat with this acclaimed pop musical based on the classic Russian Fairytale of Baba Yaga the Witch. It’s guaranteed to delight anyone who has ever lived, loved or blown their nose! With a gripping storyline, catchy pop tunes and entertaining characters, those who haven’t yet experienced the mesmerising work of this innovative company will be in for a wonderful surprise – a taste of the West End musical in your own back yard.
To make the most of their visit to the theatre children can join in with a fun, practical drama workshop and learn all about the characters, the music and who to hiss and boo. Workshops are lead by the stars of the show and begin an hour before the performance.
With a glittering cast, colourful characters and memorable music this is just about as close to entertainment heaven as you can get so if you’re picking just one show this year - Pick the witch’s bogey! Scott Maley, aka Freddie Mercury, says "We are all huge Queen fans who have taken on a role and work hard at it. What we do is very much a rock show, it's very visual, dynamic and extremely authentic.” Scott believes that members of a tribute band should have some physical resemblance to those they are impersonating – and fortunately he looks just like Freddie Mercury. Wed 30 Apr. Richard Dunn: Reading the Waves & Shooting the Sun Reading the waves, shooting the sun - navigating before the world went electronic. During this illustrated talk, Richard Dunn, Curator of the History of Navigation at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, will be exploring the methods mariners developed over the centuries to take their vessels safely and speedily from place to place.
As well as the techniques and instruments for navigating by the stars that predominated in Europe, he will be looking at those developed in other parts of the world, including the seafarers of Polynesia. 6.30 at the Maritime Museum Lecture £7 With two-course buffet £15
