Whats on in June

Every Sat in June SUMMER SAILING CRUISES FROM THE MARITIME MUSEUM
The perfect way to see Falmouth at its best with the National Maritime Museum Cornwall’s sailing cruises.

Jump aboard, set sail and enjoy a pleasant cruise from the Museum’s pontoon aboard Softwing, a 24ft Traditional Truro River Oyster Dredger. The 1½ hour trip will cruise the Falmouth coastline and offers passengers the chance to view the town and an abundance of local sea-life from the water.

Designed to be operated by one man, Softwing was built at Yard Point, Penpol Creek in 1900 by Frank Hitchens. A working boat for sixty years, she was used to dredge the oyster beds at the northern end of the harbour, later being adapted for shark fishing, before sadly laying disused and deteriorating for a number of years. In 1994 she was bought by the Cornish Maritime Trust and, using Heritage Lottery Funding, was restored and equipped to her present condition, sailing with members of the Trust to demonstrate how she was operated by past generations.

Enjoy this gentle and relaxing cruise of the Carrick Roads aboard this beautiful boat seeping with tradition and history, and feel as though you’ve sailed back in time.

Trips depart from the Museum’s pontoon at 12pm and 3pm and are available on Saturdays throughout May, June and September and Wednesdays and Thursday throughout July and August, weather permitting. Tickets cost £20. Please call 01326 214550 for bookings.
