Every Sat in May SUMMER SAILING CRUISES FROM THE MARITIME MUSEUM The perfect way to see Falmouth at its best with the National Maritime Museum Cornwall’s sailing cruises.
Jump aboard, set sail and enjoy a pleasant cruise from the Museum’s pontoon aboard Softwing, a 24ft Traditional Truro River Oyster Dredger. The 1½ hour trip will cruise the Falmouth coastline and offers passengers the chance to view the town and an abundance of local sea-life from the water.
Designed to be operated by one man, Softwing was built at Yard Point, Penpol Creek in 1900 by Frank Hitchens. A working boat for sixty years, she was used to dredge the oyster beds at the northern end of the harbour, later being adapted for shark fishing, before sadly laying disused and deteriorating for a number of years. In 1994 she was bought by the Cornish Maritime Trust and, using Heritage Lottery Funding, was restored and equipped to her present condition, sailing with members of the Trust to demonstrate how she was operated by past generations.
Enjoy this gentle and relaxing cruise of the Carrick Roads aboard this beautiful boat seeping with tradition and history, and feel as though you’ve sailed back in time.
Trips depart from the Museum’s pontoon at 12pm and 3pm and are available on Saturdays throughout May, June and September and Wednesdays and Thursday throughout July and August, weather permitting. Tickets cost £20. Please call 01326 214550 for bookings.

Mon 5 May. the story of The Fighting Temeraire. WHAT links the nation’s favourite painting, Admiral Lord Nelson and a prison ship on the Tamar? In a revealing talk at the Maritime Museum on Monday 5 May at 12.30pm Sam Willis will tell the story of The Fighting Temeraire. This lunchtime lecture is part of a new programme, combining a lecture and lunch, which explores different historical and nautical themes, many of which are based on events in the West Country. It will tell the fascinating story of Turner’s painting, voted the nation’s favourite in a 2005 Radio 4 poll. Maritime historian and archaeologist, Sam Willis, says: “The story of The Fighting Temeraire is a remarkable one that unites Britain’s most famous artist with Britain’s most famous admiral, Lord Nelson. And, as with all good stories, there is a South-West connection; from 1813 to 1819, the Temeraire was a prison ship on the Tamar.” Today, Turner’s painting hangs in the National Gallery in Trafalgar Square, only yards from Nelson’s Column and both the painting and the statue are less than a mile from St. Paul’s Cathedral, where the two men are buried within feet of each other. Sam Willis is the author of Fighting Ships 1750-1850; Fighting Ships 1850-1950; Fighting at Sea in the Eighteenth Century: The Art of Sailing Warfare; and Shipwrecks. He is currently working on a biography of the Temeraire. The lecture and set lunch is from 12.30 – 3 pm on Monday 5 May and costs £12.50. To book your place please call 01326 214546.
Mon 5 May. Angus and Julia Stone Beguiling Australian duo announce headline show at the Princess Pavilion.
Having just played a sellout mini tour, including an intimate show at Miss Peapod’s in Penryn, the beguiling pair are set to return to Falmouth on May 5th as part of a nationwide tour to coincide with the release of their debut album “A Book Like This” – a collection of heartfelt and organic songs that tell of their experiences and observation, all penned with their own unique narrative style.
Hailing from a highly musical family in the northern beaches of Sydney, it seemed almost inevitable that Angus and Julia would become musicians, and their childhood days, infused with their mothers record collection and their dad’s covers band has given them an ease and naturalness with music which comes across in their tracks. They admit that having heard The White Album only a few years ago, it came as something of a surprise that their Dad hadn’t written some of the tracks…
Eventually starting to perform at open mic nights, the siblings soon realised that they worked well together and decided to record an EP “Chocolates and Cigarettes” to sell at gigs, which in turn brought them to the attention of both radio stations and a booking agent. The agent managed to get them some slots on Australian music festivals, where Angus and Julia got a feel for how things could be for them.
Moving to London last year, the band soon found themselves taken under the wing of Fran Healy from Travis, who loaned his piano for some recording they wanted to do. “We really wanted to record this particular song on piano, he offered his beautiful 18th century grand piano for the song…and so we went round to his house and then just sort of ended up playing a whole lot more” says Julia.
Although the band has drawn comparisons with Portishead, Damien Rice and Paul Simon, they don’t care whether tagged as folky, bluesy-rock or acoustic, it’s the music that matters to them. “We don’t listen to heaps of other music” says Angus “We are two people who play because…well just because…and if people can enjoy the music and feel something then that is a wonderful thing”.
Main support will be Dublin based singer songwriter Jenny Lindfors with local support from General Store who may be unknown to many but are the acoustic side project of Tam Johnstone, AKA as Mr Glass Shark.

Robben is signed with Concord Records, the largest independently owned record company. In 2002, he released "Blue Moon", and in 2003 "Keep on Runnin' ", a recording full of the 60's blues/R&B feeling with which he grew up.
His third release for Concord is entitled "Truth" which has just received a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary Blues Album. "Truth" represents the blues as they are today; some of the songs are socio-political in essence, but not without humour, and the musical setting is fresh."
Oli Brown+ Support: The Oli Brown Band
Oli has played guitar since the age of 12. He's now only 18. His first main influence in guitar work was Jimi Hendrix. Blues initially was a genre of music for him to solo over and he didn't take the time to understand its meaning. In 2005, when invited to the States to guest with American Blues band Blinddog Smokin', he learned about stage performance, soloing and some of the history and meaning of the Blues, which has all helped develop Oli's writing, singing and playing to produce a consummate performer.
From the America tours every summer with Blinddog Smokin' he managed to open for artists such as Buddy Guy, Taj Mahal, Delbert McClinton, Koko Taylor, Eric Sardinas and many others. Back in England Oli has had the pleasure of playing alongside John Mayall, Walter Trout, Aynsley Lister, Ian Parker and others.

Sat 24 May. GERMAINE GREER Shakespeare's Wife A study of the life of Anne Hathaway, the little known wife of The Bard.
The Australian writer, feminist and academic discusses her latest book; a study of the life of Anne Hathaway, her importance in the life and career of the bard and a social history of Shakespeare's time.
It's a fascinating reconstruction of Ann's life and the daily lives of Elizabethan women; offering an illuminating portrait of their working routines, the rituals of their courtship, and the minutiae of married life.
Set to be Germaine's most controversial book since The Female Eunuch, it presents a contentious, yet convincingly argued set of hypotheses about the wife of William Shakespeare.
Greer's Hathaway is a milkmaid, 'stout and straight, strong enough to carry two bulky wooden pails suspended from a yoke across her shoulders'. She makes malt, brews ale, raises pigs, cures her own bacon, bakes bread. This book is a marvellous imagining of the life of Shakespeare's wife and a devastating exposure of the misogyny of the male biographers who have disparaged her.
The presentation will be followed by a question and answer session.

The original queen of 'flower power' ballads Melanie Sakfa made her name after a legendary performance at Woodstock before going on to sell over 80 million records, with her beautifully observed, divinely evocative folk songs covered by artists as diverse as Dolly Parton and Macy Gray. Once hailed by The New York Times as the female Bob Dylan, Melanie has recently undergone a critical rediscovery following her sell-out concert at the Southbank Centre as part of Jarvis Cocker's Meltdown Festival.
Accompanied by her guitar virtuoso son Beau-Jarred, Melanie seamlessly entwines new songs with her Emmy and Grammy award-winning classics Brand New Key, Lay Down (Candles in the Rain) and What Have They Done To My Song. With her self-deprecating humour and vibrant engagement with life, there are few who can illustrate people's pain and anguish so honestly and respectfully.

Wed 28 May A Victorian trip down the River Fal by Ralph Bird At the Maritime Museum. Time: 6 for 6.30pm. Location: Lecture Theatre
Lose yourself in a virtual tour through the ages of the River Fal with this look back in time at how the Fal has changed over the last 100 years from a working river to one of leisure.
This illustrated journey through time looks at the plethora of ships and boats the river has seen over the last century.
Starting in Truro and ending in Falmouth, the talk points out places of interest and highlights the different uses of this water motorway; from barges trading up and down river, carrying everything from wheat, road stone and even beer to passenger steamers that piloted the river.
The Fal is also well known for the many ships laid up in its upper reaches. At times, before and after WW2, there were as many as 70 war and cargo ships laid up and this talk embraces the many decades and many faces the River Fal has seen.
